About Me

Left Lane Designs, based out of Southeast Wisconsin, started out in September 2010 with an engineering student (that's me, Matt) who wanted automotive parts that didn't exist in the aftermarket.

It began with headlight customization for Chevy Cobalts as that was the commuter car I had throughout college. Simple aesthetic changes, like painting the headlight housings black, were found to completely change how the car looked. Aftermarket options existed, but the cheap looking style and poor quality of those parts wasn't great considering most people just wanted something simple, good performing, and clean. As time went on, aftermarket companies started coming out with HID projector kits that, with some creative thinking and basic rotary tools, you could package where the OEM halogen bulb went. Better light output and a customized OEM style look. Can you say yes? This became known to the car community as headlight retrofitting. Throughout the years, projector kits became cheaper and more durable. Accent lighting options, such as LED halos and strips, have exploded in the market giving retrofit installers the capability to build nearly anything imaginable. This explosion of available products naturally led to tail light customization as well!

In 2018, after owning multiple vehicles with hand-built retrofits, I found myself with a 1999 Mazda Miata (my 3rd Miata...) being built for roadcourse use. I naturally had to build headlights and tail lights like never seen before in the Miata community. I also wanted a clean and functional way to duct air out of fenders without the aesthetically unappealing way of just cutting off the lower half of our fenders. You probably guessed it, that fender product didn't exist! This led to the aerodynamic side of what you see on our website and the first louvered lower fender vents on the market anywhere. I partnered up with Flyin' Miata in 2020 to exclusively sell the fender vents on the global market; a relationship that stood strong until 2024 when it was decided to discontinue them due to TONS of copy-cat competition entering the market.

New in 2024, I added 3D scanning capabilities to the portfolio to "accelerate your creativity". While the scanner investment was bought to speed up my own R&D on new project ideas, I realized there were thousands of you looking for similar 3D files for your own projects. Instead of gatekeeping the files to myself, I post them here for all to take advantage of.

I hope to continue growing with new innovative automotive products. Function AND form is the goal for my products, from headlights to taillights while scanning everything in-between.
